Training and Learning

1. Short course training and experiential learning programmes in participatory methods for multicultural groups in the UK and overseas.

Courses of two to three weeks are available for groups who wish to develop participatory methods skills in any of the following; sustainable agriculture, rural livelihoods, communication and facilitation, extension, research and monitoring and evaluation.

These types of course are now considered important in the need to move away from conventional, top-down teaching of skills and methods to a more holistic, adult-learning based approach in which participants are engaged in the process of course design, implementation and evaluation.

The courses are designed in order to give professionals an holistic understanding of theory, practice and learning techniques which are matched to their own needs at present and in the future.

The courses are based on experiential learning with a balance of classroom theory and practice of methods, real life experience in the field and critical reflection. The methods used include: systems thinking, participatory diagramming, action research and development. Widespread use will be made of participants’ own contributions and case studies in the course programme.

The courses have been widely tested in many countries over many years, either a stand alone courses (eg. Ghana, Bangladesh, UK, Ethiopia) or as components in Masters programmes for academic students or senior professional staff (eg. South Africa, Ireland, Sweden, Greece, Vietnam) Course outlines and examples of courses already run are given in Appendix 1. (or hyperlink?)
