Course 2: A FIELD RESEARCH EXPERIENCE IN PARTICIPATORY RESEARCH METHODS

Purpose: to develop skills in and understanding of participatory research methods through experiential learning

Duration: three to five weeks.

Location: An agricultural landscape in the United Kingdom, Western Ireland, or in a country in Africa or Asia (negotiable)

Participants: 12– 25. The course will attract participants, of all ages, who have a variety of professional backgrounds, and a commitment to applied and practical research and development activities.

Objectives:
• to apply participatory research knowledge and skills in a field situation. Participants will have taken Course 1: Participatory Research Methods for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Livelihoods, or an equivalent course
• to develop participants’ skills in facilitation, team research, and systems thinking.Content: The course is field-based. It allows opportunity for small teams to work on complex problems in messy situations.

Methods: The course is facilitated and back-stopped by experienced participatory researchers.
Field work may, either, a). be conducted as an integral component of a full time course at a common location, or, b). in small groups (3-5) from a rural or peri-urban community, who wish to conduct participatory research in their own situation following an introductory training period.

In their field work, participants are expected to form small teams and undertake investigations and analysis together with members of the community or problem field.

Assessment: Each group will prepare a written report and a presentation, that will be shared with members of their action learning situation. The course participants, course co-ordinator and facilitators, and other members of the action learning situation will together develop the criteria for assessing the reports and the presentations. Groups who adopt the b) option may not be required to report back to plenary sessions with the course facilitators.
