Organisational Support

For many years, the Director of RULIVSYS has been involved in the restructuring of institutions , particularly those involved in agricultual and rural development, in universities, national and international research institutions and NGOs . Most of these experiences have been related to the introduction of systems and farming and livelihood systems research and development thinking and the necessary structural and organisational changes that are necessary, following the decision to move from a disciplinary or commodity based structure to a more systemic organisation.

Some examples of this work are given below :-

  • International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas ( ICARDA), Syria . Development of the new Farming Systems Programme within a commodity based structure 1977-80

  • Pakhribas Agricultural Research Station, Nepal .Farming Systems Development Farming Systems approach in an institution with 13 divisions. 1987-89

  • Department of Tropical Crop Science , Wageningen Agricultural University. Early attempt to evolve an interdisciplinary (social and natural science) approach to research and education. 1989-91

  • Nyankpala Research Station , Northern Ghana. Restructuring of GTZ supported institution with a Farming Systems approach . 1992

  • CIAT, Bolivia Introduction of Systems and restructuring . UK aid programme 1993.

  • Department of Rural Development Studies , Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala 1996-2000 Development of a new interdisciplinary research and education programme in a highly segmented ( 79 Departments in 1996) structure.

  • National Agricultural Research system in Laos. Early evolution of new research system with a mandate to develop a farming systems approach to research and development . 2000-2002
